Frequently asked questions

What ages do these Phoenix theaters cast?

The 17 theaters tracked here cast a wide age range — from children as young as 5 through teens up to age 19. Specific age bands vary by show. Companies like Valley Youth Theatre, Childsplay, Greasepaint Youtheatre, and East Valley Children's Theatre regularly cast children ages 5–12. Teen-focused programming (ages 11–19) shows up at Actors Youth Theatre, Spotlight Youth Theatre, Fountain Hills Youth Theater, and Desert Stages Theatre. Adult-and-teen ensemble shows at Arizona Broadway Theatre, The Phoenix Theatre Company, Hale Centre Theatre, Mesa Encore Theatre, and TheaterWorks often cast teens alongside adults. Each audition card lists the specific age range for that show.

What's the difference between children's theater and youth theater in Phoenix?

In the Phoenix Metro Area, the terms children's theater, youth theater, and teen theater are often used interchangeably, but there are real differences. A children's theater typically casts performers ages 5–12 in productions designed for family audiences. A youth theatre usually serves a wider age band — generally 8–18 — and produces full Broadway-style musicals and plays with young performers in lead roles. A teen theater specifically focuses on ages 11–19, with material and rehearsal commitments suited to middle- and high-school performers. Many of the organizations on this list — Valley Youth Theatre, Spotlight Youth Theatre, Greasepaint Youtheatre, Actors Youth Theatre — produce programming that spans all three.

How often are Phoenix auditions posted here?

Every two weeks. The directory is rebuilt on a bi-weekly schedule by checking each of the 17 tracked theaters' official audition pages and pulling in any new or upcoming casting calls. Audition windows that have already closed are filtered out by default — toggle the Open only switch off to see them. On the first of each month, we also scan the Phoenix area for newly launched youth theatre companies and add them to the list.

Which Phoenix cities does this directory cover?

The directory covers the full Phoenix Metro Area: Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe, Glendale, Peoria, and Fountain Hills. Most teen and children's theater companies in the Valley are concentrated in the East Valley (Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe, Scottsdale) and central Phoenix, with strong programs also in the West Valley (Peoria, Glendale) and Fountain Hills.
